Characters - Templates
Character Templates are pre-created groupings of Custom Attributes based on established techniques you can fill in to help you create compelling characters. You can also create your own. This article covers how Character Templates work on Desktop and Web.

Plottr currently includes the following Character Templates:
- Birth Order
- Character Bio
- Cognitive Distortions
- Enneagram
- Goal, Motivation, Conflict
- Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
- Snowflake Method
You can use as many templates in your file as you’d like and you can also create your own Custom Templates.
Starter Templates
To create a new character from a Starter Template:
- Click the “Use Template” button
- Click the Template you’d like to use under "Starter Templates"
- Click the “Choose" button
To apply a Starter Template to an existing Character:
- Click on the Character you wish to edit
- Click on the "Add Template" button within the editing pane
- Click on the Template you'd like to use under "Starter Templates"
- Click the "Choose" button
To remove a Template from a Character:
- Click on the Character you wish to edit
- Click on the name of the template within the editing pane
- Click the "Remove Template" button
Custom Templates
Plottr allows you to create your own custom character templates that you can reuse across your books and projects.
To create a Custom Character Template:
- Open the Attributes menu
- Add one or more Custom Attributes
- Click “Save as Template”
- Give the template a name, description, and/or source link
To edit a Custom Character Template:
- Click the “Use Template” button
- Select the Template you’d like to edit under My Templates
- Click the edit icon
- Update the name, description, or link
- Click the “Save” button
To delete a Custom Character Template:
- Click the “Use Template” button
- Select the Template you’d like to delete under My Templates
- Click the trash icon
- Click the “Delete” button to confirm
Known Limitations
- You cannot currently add or remove attributes within an existing Custom Character Template
